We know not everyone can afford studded snow tires for bikes. As an alternative, we suggest using zip ties to make homemade studded bike tires to help biking in the snow, ice and slush. Zip ties are easy, sturdy, form fitting and can last an entire winter riding season if properly mounted.
A few notes about rims and brakes before you try biking in the snow: If you have disc brakes (the brakes surrounding your axles) then you’re set to start applying the zip ties! If you have rim brakes (the brakes that attach via the front and rear forks) then you’ll only be able to outfit your front tire with zip ties. This means you’ll have to unhook your front rim brakes … slightly dangerous, but check out the tutorial below to outfit your wheels with some grit.
- Zip Ties
- Bike – preferably with disc brakes, but we used regular rim brakes in this example
- Scissors (steps below)
- If you’re working with rim brakes, unbuckle your front brakes
- Join 2 zip ties at a right angle … repeat 5-10 times
- Clinch zip ties around the tire
- Trim ties
