Hurom Juicer PrepThis morning, GreenCupboards dove into juicing, and tested out the Hurom Slow Juicer. We are wild about this juicer! Several GreenCupboards employees love juicing and it was a treat to test out the Hurom.  This machine is powerful, fun to use, easy to clean and makes some awesome juice. The Hurom uses a low speed technology system which means it maximizes the amount of nutrients and vitamins found in your favorite fruits and vegetables without all the noise.

This is what we love about the Hurom Slow Juicer:
  • Hurom Slow JuicerNoise: The first thing we noticed when we turned this juicer on is how quiet it is. It barely made a buzz!
  • Power: Even though it is quiet, that does not mean this thing does not have any horse power! The Hurom can handle stocky carrots and other high density produce yielding more condensed pulp, and you know what that means: More Juice!
  • External Trough: Many juicers have an internal trough that holds all the pulp. This can make it messy to clean as well as difficult to juice a lot at once because you constantly have to clean out the trough. The Hurom’s trough is external, making pulp more easily accessible for post-juicing use such as composting.
  • Clean-up: There are many pieces to this juicer. We originally thought the clean up process would be a little difficult and time consuming. Boy, were we wrong!  Each piece easily detached from each other and cleaning was simple. The juicer even comes with a little pick and brush to help– making it easy to get any pulp out of the small nicks and crannies.  Cleaning the Hurom was a breeze!

Hurom JuiceOne thing to keep in mind when using the Hurom is to be sure to cut your fruit and veggies into manageable pieces. It is best to cut food items into pieces no larger than 2 inches.  And for those of you wondering, we juiced two different concoctions together today.  The first was kale, carrot, apple, ginger, sage and lime. The second was watermelon, grapefruit and apple. Both were delicious!  What are some of your favorite juice recipes? We’d love to hear from you! One of the best ways to cool off during the hot summer months is taking a dip in the pool. But there is nothing worse than burning eyes, itchy skin and green hair as a result of spending all day in a pool full of cleaning chemicals. The floatron is a solar powered water purifier which mineralizes pool water, thereby reducing algae growth.

floatron purifies pool water by using mineral ions in place of harsh chemicals such as chlorine. This non-toxic purifier releases mineral ions into the water as it floats across swimming pools. While the mineral ions are harmless to you, they are 1000 times more effective at halting the growth of algae and other microorganisms, purifying water such that it falls within the EPA’s established drinking water standards. The unit is so safe that you can swim with it as it purifies.

Unlike chlorine, which quickly loses potency through sun exposure, the mineral ions remain effective for weeks without evaporating. Great for keeping water fresh in pools that are covered during the off-season, the purifier begins producing ions immediately after being placed in a pool under sun exposure. The unit produces ion levels sufficient for pool purification within two weeks (depending on pool volume). Yet, the floatron does not produce enough electrical current for electric shock, so no worries about getting the same zap the algae are feeling.

Trying to save money and stay warm this Holiday season? GreenCupboards.com employees are trying to keep warm in the office using space heaters and blankets wondering if we’re doing everything we can to optimize our energies potential. These three steps are helping us save some green while getting “greener” as well.  They may do the same for you.

  1. Cover cracks – The first step you can take in making your house more energy efficient this Holiday season is to seek out any crevasses where heat could be escaping. The cracks under doors are notorious for letting the hot air out. By making a door sweep this energy loss can be minimized. A door sweep is a piece of material that is laid at the base of a door, coving the space between the door and the floor. You can purchase a door sweep or make your own by simply folding a blanket or towel and placing it at the bottom of a door.

If you have an attic with pull down stairs, you can better insulate it by placing a blanket over the stairs when you fold it up. It should be a no-brainer, yet also make sure your windows are securely shut.

  1. Turn thermostat down, not off – Turning your thermostat off when you leave is surprisingly not the most energy efficient solution. Rather than turning your thermostat off, turn it down instead. All of the stress from turning the heat on and off can damage your energy system and cause it to break prematurely. When you leave, you should set your heat at 50-60 degrees F and when you come home you shouldn’t crank it all the way up but set it at around 70-80 degrees F.
  1. Help your radiator – Maximize your radiator’s potential by placing heat reflectors against the wall behind your radiator.  By using heat reflectors you can get much more bang for your buck from your radiator’s heat. This technique can also work for people trying to heat a room using a space heater.
