Dairy Free Eco-Trait
The Dairy Free Eco-Trait applies to all of the eco-friendly products that are milk and lactose free.
In general, dairy most often refers to milk or milk products containing lactose. According to the Mayo Clinic and the U.S. National Library of Medicine, lactose intolerance is characterized by gastrointestinal discomfort caused by lack of lactase enzymes which break down lactose. The Dairy Free Eco-Trait indicates products that do not contain dairy. The Dairy Free Eco-Trait should not be confused with the Vegan Eco-Trait since dairy free products may well contain other animal products or by products, while all products marked with the vegan Eco-Trait are dairy free by default.
While grocery items are the first that come to mind when shopping dairy free, many other products that you may not expect may contain lactose or milk protein. Lactose can often be found in cosmetics, sunscreens, lotions, household cleaners, hair care products and supplements among other products. The Dairy Free Eco-Trait is used so you can find dairy free products across all categories and be sure that your products truly are lactose free.
