Description

Modules in the PowerFilm Wireless Electronics Series offer a new opportunity to solve the old problem of limited power for wireless electronics for portable and remote applications. PowerFilm Wireless Electronics modules are lightweight, paper thin, and durable. Their ultra-thin profile enables them to be easily integrated with devices for solar recharging or direct powering. Modules have been specifically developed to recharge AA, AAA, and 6 and 12-volt batteries. These modules do not have a UV-stabilized surface, but are suitable for intermitant outdoor use.

The OEM Components line consists of the most basic of flexible solar cell technology. There are 22 different cells in three different product lines to choose from, ranging in size, voltage, current, and encapsulation material. Each cell is created by depositing amorphous silicon on a thin plastic substrate and then encapsulating the cells in either a Polyester coating or heavy duty Tefzel, a DuPont product. The cells are paper thin and can be wrapped around almost any curved surface. The three product lines are the Electronic Series, the RC Aircraft Series, and the WeatherPro Series. Each series has been designed with certain characteristics. The Electronics Series is perfect for integration into small portable electronics. The RC Aircraft Series has the best weight to power ratio as they were constructed with model aircraft in mind. The WeatherPro Series was built for permanent fixture in the outdoors, as the Tefzel coating has a rated lifespan of 20 years.

PowerFilm is manufactured using breakthrough proprietary manufacturing processes. The core process is a true roll-to-roll process. The general process steps are Vacuum Deposition (Back Metal, Amorphous Silicon, Transparent Top Contact), Printing and Laser Scribing, Bus Bar/Lead Attachment, Encapsulation, and Die Cutting. PowerFilm is patterned on a 13 inch wide web on a roll up to 2400 feet long. The proprietary roll-to-roll semiconductor manufacturing process of Iowa Thin Film TechnologiesTM enables lower-cost manufacturing and enhanced product functionality through ease of customization. Overall efficiency is strongly dependent on the module design configuration which determines the percentage of the area which is actually collecting sunlight. You can use 5% as a starting point. We have ongoing research and development programs to continue to improve the efficiency of PowerFilm modules. Note: There are widely varying standards for module efficiency numbers. We encourage you to test actual commercially manufactured modules on a consistent basis.

Directions

It is extremely important to recognize the correct polarity of the PowerFilm modules! A diode, such as 1N5817, is recommended to prevent the solar module from draining the battery when the solar module is in the dark. A diode is not required for a battery-free electrical device. The positive end of the module connects to the positive end of the load. The negative end of the module is also shown in the diagram and should be connected to the negative end of the load. The recommended connector wire size is a minimum size of 24 gauge. As an extra measure, connect the solar module to a digital multimeter for polarity (+,-) identification. On solar modules with copper tape leads, remove a small piece of the clear coating that is on top of the copper tape to ensure good contact between the alligator clips of the digital multimeter and the copper tape.

Warnings

Warning! Do not connect a charged battery backwards or reverse polarity to the solar module, this will destroy the solar module and may cause the battery to explode causing bodily harm, even death!
