Non-GMO (Genetically Modified
Organisms) Eco-Trait
The Non-GMO Eco-Trait categorizes products free from genetically modified organisms and materials as deemed by our vendors. What are GMO products? Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) consist of animals, plants and/or bacteria whose genetic information has been bioengineered or synthetically altered to achieve a desired genotype, and hence phenotype.
Genetically altered organisms go through gene therapy in order to express particular desired traits such as higher yield, drought or pest resistance. In like manner, animals may be altered to yield more or less produce such as milk or meat. For example, a wheat head can be engineered to yield more kernels, providing greater produce per acre for farmers. Oppositely, a GM flower could produce pollen that inhibits the reproduction of a certain insect species.
The GreenCupboards Non-GMO Eco-Trait helps filter through non GMO foods and products on our site. GMOs continue to be the point of contention amongst members from all sides of the scientific, health and environmental communities, which all share concerns about the effects of GMOs on farmers, human health, the treatment of lands and animals. The GMO field is ever expanding, further complicating controversial implications as to the effects of GM plants, animals and bacteria on their non-GM or “natural” counterparts.
Shop with our Non-GMO Eco-Trait to have confidence that your products will be all natural and free of genetic alterations.
