We've found this great cooperative called Asociacion Chajulense Val Vaq Quyol, which means "only one voice", located in Chajul, El Quiche, Guatemala. Sometimes we put their coffee in our Fair Trade Organic French Roast. We've been working hard to get to know the co-op better - two Employee Origin Trip groups have visited, and even our CEO Larry Blanford visited them in January 2008. Chajulense, as we call the co-op, has about 1,600 members and they're able to sell all their coffee as Fair Trade Certified™. The co-op has also diversified their production to include cardamom, honey, milk, and cheese; they built an inn to promote local tourism; they opened an Ixil culture center; and they fund the production of traditional women's dresses.

Protecting the Environment
People depend on the land to make their living. This is true in places where coffee is grown, like Indonesia, Guatemala, and Rwanda, but it's just as true at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters headquarters in Vermont, or in any of the thousands of locations where Green Mountain Coffee is sold. In 2000, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters were among the first U.S. roasters to sell Fair Trade Certified coffee. They now offer one of the largest selections of double-certified, Fair Trade organic coffees.

Partnering with Supply-Chain Communities
Strong relationships with their farmers helps improve the quality of coffee and the quality of life, in communities around the world. Green Mountain Coffee Roaster's coffee buyers travel extensively to find the finest Arabica beans and train farmers in cupping and sensory evaluation. Working together, they develop a common language to talk about quality, and farmers get a better understanding of how their work influences the coffee in your cup.

Supporting Local Communities
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has been donating time, coffee, and money to nonprofits in their neighborhood communities since 1981. Each year, they donate to more than 1,200 nonprofit organizations. Employees volunteer to work on company time and get 6.5 paid workdays to contribute to their community.
