The Handmade Eco-Trait calls out all of the products on GreenCupboards that are handmade or handcrafted by people from the United States and around the world. Finding and buying handmade goods can cause frustration ... unless you’re shopping with Eco-Traits. Since handicrafts are often categorized with misleading or incorrectly labeled descriptors, the Handmade Eco-Trait denotes handicrafts and goods made directly by hand, such as a woven basket, or individually in small crafted batches with the use of tools such as wood blocks that are hand painted or finished by hand.
The Eco-Trait is not applied to products that are simply assembled by hand. For example, toys with parts that are made by machine and assembled by hand DO NOT fall under the Handmade Eco-Trait since the majority of their construction is mechanical in nature and beyond the capability of a single person or group of craftspeople to replicate on the same scale. Handcrafted items may also include crafts such as earrings, furniture, even bikes - if the bulk majority of the manufacturing process is guided by the design and administration of a craftsperson.
