So what exactly are dissolved solids? It's simply anything in your water that isn't hydrogen or oxygen in your water! This can include minerals, salts, metals, cations and anions in the water. Some of these particulates come from leaves, silt, and industrial waste from the water source. Others come from runoff like road salts and pesticides. Inorganic materials like rocks and air that contain nitrogen, iron, and phosphorus can also contaminate water. Contaminates can even come from your pipes! High levels of TDS can make your water taste unpleasant, cause hard water, and make food and coffee taste off.

In a commercial setting, these particulates can cause problems for aquariums, hydroponic facilities, pools & spas, industrial facilities (particularly when boilers and cooling towers are used), and car washes.
