What Makes It "Green"
Yoga philosophy recognizes the interconnectedness of everyone and everything on earth. As a yoga products company, Hugger Mugger feels it is important to do business in a way that is compatible with yogic ideals. As sustainable materials have become more accessible and functional over the years, they have consistently researched and implemented sustainable policies, both in their product and packing materials.
Current practices at Hugger Mugger include using recycled materials for packaging, participating in waste recycling programs and participating in environmentally friendly energy programs (e.g. wind power). Many of their products are manufactured in a facility in Salt Lake City where tight quality controls and environmentally friendly production techniques are in place, such as hand craftsmanship; which is non-polluting and consumes minimal amounts of electricity.
Toxic chemicals like those sometimes found in paints or glues are never used in manufacturing and assembly processes. As an example: wood blocks are assembled individually and finished by hand rubbing with bees wax.
They have recently completely changed product packaging so as to use only 100% post-consumer recycled paper. They've eliminated the use of shrink wrap on all products except wooden blocks, which are vulnerable to damage without it. Additionally, all catalogs and other marketing materials are manufactured with recycled paper and vegetable dyes.
Hugger Mugger's environmentally friendly products utilize some of the following:
- Biodegradable materials - natural and recycled rubber and blends of plant- and petroleum-based PVC.
- Recycled fiber blends - that are dye and chemical free.
- Sustainable materials - cork, bamboo and recycled plastics.
- Organic Materials - like organic hemp in their yoga straps as a renewable material with minimal environmental footprint.
None of Hugger Mugger's mats, including all their PVC products, have ever contained heavy metals or phthalates.
