Sun Protection Factor (SPF)
The SPF indicates the time a person with sunscreen applied can be exposed to sunlight before getting sunburn, relative to the time a person without sunscreen can be exposed. This assumes constant solar intensity over the time period. On any day, someone who would burn after 12 minutes in the sun would expect to burn after 120 minutes if protected by a sunscreen with SPF 10. Protection from a particular sunscreen depends on factors such as the skin type of the user, amount applied and frequency of re-application, and activities of user such as swimming. There is no good clinical measurement for blockage of UVA radiation, but it is important that sunscreen block both UVA and UVB.
Zinc oxide is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB absorber, better than any other physical or chemical sunscreen. We use a non-nano, uncoated zinc oxide with a particle range of .5-10 microns. (A nanoparticle is .1 microns and smaller.) Zinc oxide is a non-toxic, physical, mineral sunscreen from naturally occurring zinc ore. It has a long history of use as a safe sunscreen, skin protectant, and as a treatment for skin disorders. It is widely known as the main ingredient in most diaper rash creams and is considered safe for use on infants and sensitive skin. Zinc oxide is a physical sunscreen that sits on the surface of the skin and works by reflecting and scattering UVA and UVB light as opposed to chemical sunscreens which work by interacting with the skin’s top layer to absorb UV rays and convert them into energy.
UVA is Ultraviolet-A long wavelength light with a range of 320 - 400 nanometers.
UVB is Ultraviolet-B medium wavelength light with a range of 280 - 320 nanometers. (UVB is partially absorbed by the ozone layer.) UVC is Ultraviolet-C short wavelength light with a range of 100 - 280 nanometers (UVC is extremely dangerous but entirely absorbed by the earth's atmosphere.) Visible Light is within the range of 400 - 700 nanometers and may cause some free radical damage. (3)Zinc oxide provides coverage between 290-700 nm. Nanoparticles are particles 0.1 microns in size or smaller. There are some concerns for nanoparticles being absorbed into the skin, entering the bloodstream and causing cellular damage.
Micronized is a term generally used to describe smaller particles and does not always mean nano sized particles. What size zinc oxide does Loving Naturals use? Our vegan sunscreen (original formula) contains uncoated zinc oxide with the smallest particle size being .12 microns. Our new clear zinc is uncoated with a non-nano size particle range from .5 - 10 microns.UVA/UVB and Harmful EffectsUVA and UVB can damage collagen fibers, accelerate aging of the skin and can destroy vitamin A in skin, which may cause further damage. In humans, prolonged exposure to solar UV radiation may result in acute and chronic health effects on the skin, eyes, and immune system. UVA radiation is responsible for the indirect DNA damage to skin (free radicals and oxidation reactions) and causes the most deadly form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma. It penetrates deeply but it does not cause sunburn and therefore cannot be measured in SPF testing. UVB radiation is responsible for the direct DNA damage to skin that leads to sunburn and skin cancer.
Free Radicals are any atoms or molecules that have a single unpaired electron in an outer shell. For most biological structures, free radical damage is closely associated with oxidative damage. Free radical damage within cells has been linked to a range of disorders including cancer, arthritis, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and diabetes.
Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells.
Anti-oxidants are molecules capable of slowing or preventing oxidative damage to biological structures by removing free radicals and preventing oxidation reactions such as caused during a sunburn.
Loving Naturals is a natural products company created out of the desire to provide safe and natural products for their family and yours!
The burden of toxins in our bodies today can be overwhelmingly heavy. Water, food, vaccines, medications, skin care products and more are often tainted with dangerous chemicals and preservatives. When the founders of Loving Naturals became new parents in 2005, they began earnestly researching how to provide the safest and healthiest environment for their baby and lower the burden of toxins to which she would otherwise be exposed. They started by eating organically grown foods, cloth diapering, treating illness naturally and using natural cleaning and skin care products.
Choosing natural skin care products was very important to them, specifically sunscreen because of how often it needed to be applied and the concern they had for the ingredients being absorbed into their baby's skin. They found that many of the so-called "natural products" didn't seem so natural after reading a long list of unexplained ingredients that they had never heard of or could not pronounce. They would often use a product that they thought was safe and find out later it contained a potentially harmful ingredient. They also learned that companies can disguise a chemical as simply "fragrance" and can actually omit "key" ingredients on the label if they have been "proven" safe. This prompted them to start their own company, Loving Naturals, created out of the desire to use the most safe and natural products on their children and provide consumers with a product they could trust. You can be assured, Loving Naturals will earnestly research every ingredient used in manufacturing, use the most natural or organic ingredients available and always disclose every single ingredient. We hope you love their products as much as we do!

good stuff

I bought this to take on a trip to Costa Rica. it is thicker than regular sunscreens, so you don't have to put too much on, just make sure you rub it in good, a little goes a long way. Other sunscreens leave me felling oily, this does not. I used the spf 30 on the beach and i applied only once, it stayed on. i was on the beach for about 4 hours and i did get a little red, however my husband who used a regular sunscreen at SPF 55 ended up much more red and slightly burned. it stayed on so well that after the beach in the shower i had to rinse and rerinse with soap and water to get it all off. i will buy again.

High-quality mineral sunscreen
July 13, 2011
This is an effective sunscreen without scary ingredients. I feel comfortable using it on my toddler. Unlike many mineral sunscreens, it is not difficult to apply. It is more of a lotion than a pasty cream. Although it does leave a whitish sheen on the skin, it doesn't leave you looking like a ghost.

Safe and effective

I have been using non-chemical sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium oxide as the active ingredient) for several years, and this is my favorite of the half dozen brands I've tried. Some of them are way too thick and some are made with the nano-size oxides, which are more likely to be absorbed through the skin. This sunscreen is the best in terms of safety, effectiveness and ease of application. It has the consistency of a lotion and goes on easily. When I apply it to my face, it looks white at first, so I wait a couple of minutes, then rub it in a little bit and blot with a tissue before applying foundation. It's moisturizing without being greasy and does not cause my sensitive skin to react. It has a subtle and pleasing scent, but there is no added fragrance. Highly recommended.

Safest Sunsceen for my little one
May 11, 2011
This sunscreen is great! I have used it on my infant with no problems at all. Best of all I know it is safe for my little one. Unlike other Zinc Oxide sunscreens this one does not leave them or me greasy or looking like a pale ghost. It leaves a slight white sheen that is more of a glow in the sun. Do your homework on Titanium Dioxide, this stuff is bad, bad, bad. Stay away and use Zinc Oxide sunscreen only, especially on the little ones. I will definitely be back for more! Thanks!

Excellent Product

I was expecting something thicker like a lotion, but this is a thinner consistency. This is an advantage as it is easy to apply and absorbs well. I did not find it greasy, though it does contain a number of oils.
I am very fair and it leaves my skin looking a bit more pale, but I've found that adding just a tiny bit of my makeup foundation balances out the color. Frankly, I think it makes me look younger, as another reviewer pointed out.
I suffer from acne and rosacea, am on a topical medicine that makes me more sensitive to the sun and my skin is naturally sensitive. Unlike other products, this doesn't burn or sting and I am confident that my skin is protected. I've not had any breakouts or other problems.
The smell is yummy, a food/cookie type smell. Excellent protection from the sun and unnecessary chemicals.
