Non-Toxic Eco-Trait
The Non-Toxic Eco-Trait applies to our eco-friendly products that are free from commonly used industrial plastics, heavy metals and harmful preservatives.
Toxic” and “Toxins” are vague descriptors that can just as easily categorize an overdose of Vitamin A as well as a hint of arsenic. It all depends on the context. Some of the common toxins that we like to exclude from our products are PVC (polyvinyl chloride), Phthalates, parabens.
PVC is a halogenated plastic, commonly used in domestic and municipal piping projects. According to Greenpeace, PVC releases residual contaminants such as hydrogen chloride and dioxins when burnt. Similarly, phthalates are plasticizers used to help make plastics more flexible. Found in almost every sector of the industrial plastic spectrum from tubing to bags, the Environmental Working Group suggests that “phthalates have been found to disrupt the endocrine system.”
Parabens consist of a group of commonly found preservatives, predominantly used in cosmetics but also found in foodstuffs. According to the FDA, “parabens are esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid.” As a result of the Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act, the FDA is not authorized to regulate the contents of cosmetics aside from color additives.
Shop using the Non-Toxic Eco-Trait to be sure that your products do not contain heavy metals, harmful preservatives, phthalates, parabens or PVC in part or in whole.
