The Smart Packaging Eco-Trait identifies products that use innovative packaging that reduce waste either through a minimalist approach to the packaging, easily recyclable packaging or both. There is no reason being green has to stop at the product and we want our shoppers to know about the companies that take it the extra step to the packaging.
Smart packaging applies to products that are packaged in easily recyclable materials, recycled material and/or highly functional containers. For example, toys packed with all sorts of screws and zip ties probably won’t cut the Smart Packaging Eco-Trait bill. That is because waste from such items essentially renders the packing unrecyclable by certain facility standards. Packages made of highly recyclable plastics and corrugated cardboard, for instance, qualify for the Smart Packing Eco-Trait since they reduce the likelihood of adding to landfill loads based on their makeup and design.
