Reclaimed Cotton reduces a lot - from waste, to chemicals and fertilizers, to the need for additional water. When a cotton T-shirt is made, there is a significant amount of extra cotton left over. In the past these remnant pieces of cotton fabric were incinerated or simply sent to landfills. Through a process of collecting the cotton, cleaning and separating it into raw fibers, we are able to make a new premium product without having to use any additional water, fertilizers, insecticides, or even farmland.
FACT: According to idealbite.com, cotton crops account for as much as 25% the world's insecticides. Combined with the large amounts of water cotton growers need to use every year, that's a lot of reducing!
Since Reclaimed Cotton fibers already exist, we are reusing a resource our society has already devoted time and energy toward. These cotton fibers were originally manufactured into sheets of fabric to make human clothing. These pre-consumer textile remnants are top quality, but simply cut too small to make another article of clothing. The Cotton is cleaned and separated into raw fibers by color, and then blended with 24% new acrylic fibers and spun into yarn. What's more is that the fibers are not re-dyed, but the careful mixing of the colored fibers allows us to reuse the existing dye on the fibers and creates the eye-catching color palette.
Waste Reduction:
Not only have they developed a manufacturing process that minimizes waste (currently as low as 2.4%!) they also took it into consideration when designing their state-of-the-art building. It was constructed using the latest developments in energy efficient design in 2001. In their building expansion in 2009 and 2010, the original back walls of the building were moved and reused in the new structure, reclaiming 175 tons of concrete.
Re-use and recycle materials throughout their manufacturing process:
Scrap materials are used to create new pet toys; reclaimed and reused old boxes are utilized to store finished goods rather than plastic manufacturing totes. They also incorporate recycled material in our shipping boxes.
West Paw uses eco friendly components in their products, like...
- IntelliLoft: West Paw utilize recycled IntelliLoft fibers that are derived from recycled plastic bottles in all of their cat and dog beds and many of our pet toys.
- Organic Cotton: Making organic cotton an option in their pet bumper bed line lets customers choose to purchase a "greener" option pet bed.
- Reclaimed Cotton: Offering dog sweaters made from reclaimed cotton utilizes a resource that already exists, which reduces waste, adds no new chemicals, and saves water.
- Organic Catnip: Found in almost all of their cat toys is US grown catnip and has a premium mixture of leaves and flowers that provide a fragrant aroma and is USDA Certified Organic!
- Zogoflex: Is super durable and made to be 100% recyclable. Dog toys made of this material will last a lifetime,
- Packaging: Even their packaging is made from recycled content that is recyclable! All items have a minimum of 30% recycled content, but most tags and packaging are 100% post-consumer recycled paper stock. Recycled PETE plastic is used in the packaging on their Hucks, Hurley, Tux, and Bumi toys - which means that not only is the toy recyclable, but so is the packaging! All of their office paper, packaging, envelopes, letterhead, etc. also contains at least 30%, but even most of these items are 100% recycled content too.
Going Green is not a new fad, it is they we are and how they live! From incorporating technology to help their office go paperless, to recycling magazines, paper, plastic, and aluminum cans in their breakroom. West Paw strives to make a minimal impact every day and continue to look for more ways to grow even greener! It shows that they like our environment and want to keep the Earth a clean planet for all!
